AirPods Max 2 Midnight Unboxing | AirPods Max 2 Review

I use quite a few Apple products.

It started with an iPad, and over time I added AirPods,
a MacBook, an iPhone, an iPad mini, an Apple Watch,
and even a Mac mini.

Before I knew it, I had pretty much built
an entire Apple ecosystem.

But even with all those Apple products, there was one device I’d been thinking about buying for years
but never actually did.

The AirPods Max!

I always loved the design of the original AirPods Max,
but the Lightning port was a bit disappointing.

And since the model had already been around for quite a while, I kept thinking it would be better to wait for the next generation.

Then, instead of a completely new generation, Apple released an updated model with USB-C.

So I waited again…

Eventually, the new AirPods Max 2 arrived,
and I finally got one as a birthday gift!

After putting off buying AirPods Max for years,
I finally got the chance to use them.

Unboxing

Why I Chose Midnight

The color I chose is Midnight.

With the original AirPods Max,
Silver was the color I wanted the most.

But with the new lineup,
Silver was gone and Starlight had been added instead.

So at first, I spent quite a while deciding
between Starlight and Midnight.

Starlight is bright and really pretty,
but when I looked through reviews from people
who had been using it, I saw quite a few comments about the ear cushions and headband getting dirty over time.

The Bose Ultra headphones
I had already been using are also a light color.

Since I only use them at home,
they still haven’t gotten particularly dirty even after
two or three years.

But with the AirPods Max, I was a little more concerned because of the mesh headband.

I’m planning to use these only at home as well,
but I still wanted a color that would be easier
to keep looking clean.

So I decided on Midnight!

In person, it doesn’t look completely black.

It has a subtle dark blue tone,
which I actually think makes it look even better.

If you prefer brighter colors, you might like Starlight more.

But considering long-term maintenance as well,
I’m glad I went with Midnight!

AirPods Max 2 Price

The official price on Apple’s website is 849,000 KRW.

When you think about paying
that much for a pair of headphones…

It’s definitely expensive.

However, you can sometimes find them for less through retailers such as Naver or Coupang rather than buying directly from Apple.

So I’d recommend comparing prices before purchasing!

What’s in the Box?

Open the box and you’ll immediately see the AirPods Max.

The included accessories are very simple.

You get:

• AirPods Max
• USB-C to USB-C cable
• Documentation

There is no separate power adapter included.

Once you remove the protective packaging,
you’ll find the AirPods Max inside the Smart Case.

One thing I noticed is that the magnets on
the case don’t feel quite as strong as I expected.

And one of the most commonly mentioned disadvantages
of the AirPods Max is portability.

After actually getting them myself,
I agree that these aren’t exactly headphones designed
to be carried around easily.

However, I bought them specifically to use at home while I’m on my computer,
so portability isn’t a major concern for me.

If you’re looking for headphones
that you’ll frequently carry around outside,
there are plenty of other good options worth considering.

Mesh Headband and Size Adjustment

The top of the AirPods Max uses a mesh headband.

It’s designed to distribute pressure across your head,
and I found it comfortable while wearing the headphones.

However, I’ve seen people mention
that the mesh can stretch over time,
so I’ve been a little careful about how I store them.

I normally hang my headphones on a headphone stand.

But with the AirPods Max,
I don’t really like the idea of having their weight
constantly pulling down on the mesh.

So I’ve been storing them flat instead.

Adjusting the headband length is very smooth.

You can simply hold both sides and extend or retract them.

They move smoothly while adjusting
but still stay securely in place once you’ve found
the position you want.

I really like how this part feels.

Another unusual thing about the AirPods Max is that there’s no dedicated power button.

It felt a little strange at first.

Instead, placing the headphones inside
the Smart Case puts them into a low-power mode.

I think it’s something I’ll get used to pretty
quickly after using them for a while.

Ear Cushion Material and Comfort

There are large L and R markings inside the ear cushions, so it’s very easy to tell which side is which.

Compared with the Bose Ultra headphones
I had been using, there’s also a noticeable difference
in the material of the ear cushions.

The Bose Ultra cushions feel smoother and softer.

The AirPods Max cushions, on the other hand,
have a slightly rougher, more fabric-like texture.

When I first touched them, they felt quite different from
the Bose cushions, so I wondered whether
the comfort would also be noticeably different.

But once I actually put them on,
they were comfortable and the material didn’t bother
me much at all.

That said, the ear cushions seem like the kind of material that could absorb sweat and moisture fairly easily,
so I think they’ll require some care if I want to keep them in good condition for a long time.

One thing I really like is that the ear cushions are
attached magnetically.

They can be removed very easily, which should make cleaning or replacing them much more convenient.

How Heavy Do They Feel?

The first thing I noticed
when I picked up the AirPods Max was, unsurprisingly,
the weight.

I think the difference felt even more noticeable because
I’ve been using the Bose Ultra.

The Bose Ultra is very lightweight, so even after wearing
it for a long time, it doesn’t feel particularly burdensome.

With the AirPods Max,
you can definitely feel more weight on your head.

I haven’t worn them continuously for more than four hours yet, but for shorter sessions,
they were more comfortable than I expected.

For someone like me who mostly uses headphones while sitting at a desk at home,
I don’t think the weight will be a huge problem.

But if you’re planning to wear them outside for long periods or carry them around frequently,
the weight is definitely something to consider.

As a fashion item, though…

They look great!

If portability and lightweight comfort are your top priorities, I personally don’t think the AirPods Max would be
the first option I’d recommend.

Why I Still Chose the AirPods Max

Take the AirPods Max out of the Smart Case
and bring them close to an iPhone,
and the connection screen appears almost immediately.

There’s no complicated setup process.

And if you’re using a Mac signed into the same
Apple Account, you can use the headphones
there naturally as well.

This was one of the biggest reasons
I wanted the AirPods Max.

I regularly use both an iPhone and a Mac mini,
and I wear headphones quite often while using
my computer.

The Bose Ultra can also connect to multiple devices.

But because I use several Apple devices, switching between them feels much more seamless with AirPods.

I can listen to music on my iPhone and then move over to my Mac, or answer a call on my iPhone while I’ve been using the headphones with my Mac.

That seamless connection between devices is
genuinely convenient.

So I didn’t choose the AirPods Max simply
because I wanted them.

Although…

Of course I did just want them too.

But more than that, I bought them because of how conveniently they fit into the Apple ecosystem
I already use every day.

USB-C Charging

The charging port is USB-C.

One of the reasons I didn’t buy the original AirPods Max before it switched to USB-C was the Lightning port.

So I was really happy to see the move to USB-C.

I can now use the same charging cables as my recent
Apple devices, including my iPad and MacBook.

It’s much more convenient.

Another advantage of this model is that you can connect
the AirPods Max directly to an iPhone
with a USB-C to USB-C cable and listen
to lossless audio through a wired connection!

I’ll probably use Bluetooth most of the time.

But if sound quality is especially important to you,
having the option to use a wired connection
for lossless audio is definitely a feature I appreciate.

Controls and Noise Cancellation

On the right ear cup,
you’ll find the Digital Crown and the Noise Control button.

You can press the Digital Crown to control music playback, pause audio, or handle calls.

Rotating the crown adjusts the volume.

I really like having a physical dial for volume control.

It’s simple and very convenient to use.

Pressing the Noise Control button lets you switch
between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode.

After trying them myself,
I’m very satisfied with the noise cancellation performance.

But I was especially impressed by how natural the Transparency mode sounds.

Even while wearing the headphones,
outside sounds don’t feel muffled or unnatural.

I really liked that.

Call Quality Was Better Than Expected

Another thing I liked more than expected was
the call quality.

Even compared with the AirPods I was already using,
the other person’s voice sounded very clear during calls.

It’s also convenient that if I’m using my computer and receive a phone call, I can simply answer it and continue talking through the AirPods Max.

The microphone quality was also noticeably good.

The person on the other end of the call could immediately tell that my voice sounded clear.

AirPods Max vs. Bose Ultra Size Comparison

I also placed the AirPods Max next to the Bose Ultra headphones I’ve been using for comparison.

When they’re side by side,
the AirPods Max look slightly larger overall.

And once you actually pick them up,
the difference in weight becomes even more obvious.

The Bose Ultra can be folded for storage and is much lighter, so it definitely has an advantage
when it comes to portability.

So if your top priority is something lightweight and comfortable enough to wear for long periods,
a lighter pair of headphones may be the better choice.

But if integration with Apple devices and design are also important to you, the AirPods Max may be a better fit.

Since I mainly plan to use mine at home, seamless integration with my Apple devices matters more
to me than portability.

For the way I use headphones,
I think the AirPods Max suits me better.

My AirPods Max 2 Review

I’d been thinking about buying AirPods Max for years.

Now that I’ve finally used them,
I’m pretty satisfied with my decision.

Of course, the price, weight,
and portability are clear disadvantages.

Especially if you’re simply looking for headphones with good noise cancellation and sound quality, whether the AirPods Max are worth this price will depend a lot on the person.

There are other lightweight headphones with excellent performance, including the Bose Ultra
I’ve already been using.

But if you use several Apple products such as an iPhone, Mac, and iPad, the experience is a little different.

Connecting and switching between devices is convenient,
the Transparency mode is excellent, and most importantly for me, I really like the design.

So overall, I’m very happy with them.

And if you’re like me and mainly want headphones to use at home with a Mac or iPhone rather than carrying them around outside, the disadvantages of their weight and portability become much less significant.

I’d been debating whether to buy these
for such a long time…

But now that I finally have them, I think
I understand why I kept wanting them all these years.
