Daedong Myeonok Gangneung Review | A Great Restaurant for Families

One of the best meals
I had during this trip to Gangneung!

I liked this place so much
that after eating here,
I actually thought,

“I want to come back to Gangneung
just to eat this again.”

And even now,
I still regret
not ordering the dumplings…

If you’re looking for
a good restaurant in Gangneung
to visit with your parents or family,
I’d definitely recommend
Daedong Myeonok Gangneung Main Branch.

Daedong Myeonok Location and Parking

Daedong Myeonok Gangneung Main Branch
is located near
Gangneung Sports Complex.

The map can be
a little confusing
when you’re visiting for the first time.

But once you get nearby,
there’s a large Daedong Myeonok sign,
so it isn’t difficult to find.

The restaurant itself
is also quite large.

More importantly,
there’s a spacious parking lot.

When you’re traveling around Gangneung
by car,
parking can sometimes be a hassle
even at popular restaurants.

Daedong Myeonok has
plenty of parking space,
which makes it convenient
if you’re driving.

Catchtable Waitlist

Daedong Myeonok also supports
remote waitlisting through Catchtable.

If you’re worried
about having to wait,
you can join the waitlist
before arriving
and head to the restaurant
when your turn gets closer.

I visited on a Sunday,
so I expected
a pretty long wait.

Surprisingly,
the wait wasn’t very long.

The restaurant is quite large
with plenty of seating,
so tables also seemed
to turn over fairly quickly.

Inside Daedong Myeonok

Inside the restaurant,
they also sell
various buckwheat products.

You can purchase them separately,
and when I visited,
some were also available
through a review promotion.

There are plenty of tables
on the first floor,
and the spacing between them
doesn’t feel too cramped.

There also seemed to be
additional dining space
on the second floor,
so the restaurant is
quite large overall.

On the way
to the restroom
on the first floor,
there’s also an air-conditioned
waiting area.

It looked like
a comfortable place to wait
on a hot day.

Daedong Myeonok Menu

Daedong Myeonok serves
more than just makguksu,
Korean buckwheat noodles.

The menu also includes
suyuk, or boiled pork slices,
dumplings,
and several other dishes.

There are seasonal dishes too,
and there were quite a few
I’d like to try
on my next visit.

Especially the dumplings…

I still don’t know
why I didn’t order them.

Next time,
I’m definitely getting them.

High chairs are also available,
which makes the restaurant
convenient for families
with young children.

There was also
a plum drink available
while waiting.

However,
as someone who usually likes
a strong plum flavor,
I found it very mild.

It tasted almost like water
with just a hint of plum,
so your opinion may differ
depending on your preference.

What We Ordered

Once you’re seated,
you can place your order
right away.

We ordered:

  • Small plate of suyuk
  • Hoe bibim makguksu
  • Mul makguksu

Three dishes in total.

Side Dishes

The side dishes
arrived first.

And there was one thing
I unexpectedly
really loved.

It was the
very dark-colored doenjang,
or Korean fermented soybean paste,
next to the salted shrimp.

At first,
the color was so dark
that I thought
it might be chunjang,
the black bean paste
used for jajangmyeon.

But when I tried it,
it was doenjang.

And it was
really good.

It paired especially well
with the suyuk.

If you order suyuk
at Daedong Myeonok,
I definitely recommend
trying it with this doenjang.

The seasoned minari,
or Korean water parsley,
served alongside it
also paired really well
with the pork.

When I visited,
it seemed like
tables that ordered suyuk
could get refills
of the seasoned minari.

How to Eat Makguksu

The restaurant also provides
instructions on how
to enjoy the makguksu.

There are instructions
posted on the wall,
so if it’s your first visit,
I’d recommend checking them
before eating.

Cold broth is available separately,
and you’ll also find
vinegar and sugar
next to the paper cups.

You can add them
according to your preference.

Rather than adding
a lot at once,
I’d recommend adding
a little at a time
until it tastes right for you.

Daedong Myeonok Suyuk

And now for the dish
I really want to recommend:

Daedong Myeonok’s suyuk.

I ordered the small plate,
which came with
seasoned raw flatfish.

There were a few
small bones in the fish,
so it wasn’t completely
my personal preference.

The flavor itself,
however,
was good.

But the suyuk…

It was seriously delicious.

The pork was warm
as if it had just been prepared,
and it was incredibly tender.

Eating it with
the doenjang I mentioned earlier
made it even better.

If I visit again,
I’d seriously consider
ordering the large plate
instead of the small one.

If you’re visiting
Daedong Myeonok,
I’d definitely recommend
ordering the suyuk
along with your noodles.

Hoe Bibim Makguksu and Mul Makguksu

On the left is
hoe bibim makguksu,
spicy mixed buckwheat noodles
with seasoned raw fish.

On the right is
mul makguksu,
buckwheat noodles
served with cold broth.

You can add
some of the prepared broth
to the noodles
and mix everything together.

We ordered one
mul makguksu
and one hoe bibim makguksu
and ate them with the suyuk.

The noodles were good
on their own,
but adding suyuk
made the meal
feel much more complete.

With all the dishes
spread across the table,
it really felt like
a proper meal
during our Gangneung trip.

A Great Gangneung Restaurant for Families

When I visited,
there were a lot
of families dining here.

I especially noticed
quite a few people
visiting with their parents.

The menu itself,
with dishes like
makguksu and suyuk,
works well for
a family meal.

The restaurant is spacious,
parking is convenient,
and high chairs
are available for children.

Overall,
I think it’s a comfortable restaurant
for everyone from young children
to parents and grandparents.

Daedong Myeonok Gangneung Overall Review

Of all the restaurants
I visited during
this Gangneung trip,
Daedong Myeonok was
one of my favorites.

The makguksu was good,
but I especially loved
the combination of
suyuk and doenjang.

I kept thinking about it
even after the meal,
so this is definitely
a restaurant I’d revisit
the next time I’m in Gangneung.

And next time…

I’m getting
the large plate of suyuk,
the dumplings I missed this time,
and maybe one of
the seasonal dishes too.

With its spacious parking lot
and large dining area,
it’s convenient
for family visits.

There were also
plenty of people dining
with their parents
when I visited.

If you’re looking for
a restaurant in Gangneung
where you can comfortably
enjoy a meal with your parents
or the whole family,
I’d recommend
Daedong Myeonok Gangneung Main Branch!
